When did you set up Uncommon Ground & why?Uncommon Ground launched in late 2011 after a friend’s shoe brand (Provensen) started making size 42 and 43 shoes due to demand. As a size 43 it was a light bulb moment. I realised that not only were there other girls out there that also needed larger sizes but there were fashionable brands that were willing to make them! For the first time since I was old enough to care about what I wore I was able to wear shoes that were just as stylish as my friends, and it was incredibly exciting to realise I could share this with other girls.
What shoe sizes do you stock & where do you ship to?We stock from 10 to 14 AU (EU41 to EU45). We ship all over the world. We offer free shipping within Australia, and delivery costs vary for the rest of the world.
Tell us about the range of styles available:Uncommon Ground is mostly for fashionable, on-trend shoes. There might be the odd high heel in there, but for the most part we’re the place you come for a cute sandal, a killer boot or great wedge.
Do you have your own label or stock any brands hard to find elsewhere? We stock Australian and New Zealand brands, almost all of which started out making larger sizes exclusively for our store. It’s slowly becoming a little easier these days to find new brands.
What do you enjoy most about running a store specialising in larger shoe sizes? Our major goal has been to change the thinking of other brands and have them realise that there actually is a market out there for larger sizes. And very slowly we have seen this change happening, but finding new suppliers is always a challenge. And of course the most enjoyable aspect is knowing that our customers are finally able to purchase on-trend shoes that they love and that fit! The majority of our sales are return customers and I think that speaks volumes about the store and our customer service.
Finally, which 3 styles best sum up Uncommon Ground?
- Django & Juliette - Rill Sandal These guys are a best seller and it’s pretty easy to see why. They’re casual, comfy and can be teamed with dresses, jeans or shorts. An all-rounder for the Australian summer.
- Mollini - Marsy Wedge These wedges are such a great addition to any wardrobe. The snakeskin print is edgy, the style is completely on-trend right now, and the neutral tones work with almost everything.
- Isabella - Sawtell Sandal These are just a stupid amount of fun.
