If you are busy getting everything organised for going back to school, having a daughter with size 9 UK feet or larger gives you a big school shoe shopping headache.
The good news is that there are several stores selling plus size school shoes for teenage girls, especially if you get creative & consider women's workwear styles too.
TIP: While this guide focuses on UK stores, most shops and brands featured also have international websites (Clarks, Amazon, Dr Martens, ASOS etc) or at least ship to most countries worldwide at a cost (e.g. Low Heels). You might also get a few ideas for school shoe options, and can then look for similar shoes at retailers in your country.
Clarks are synonymous with quality school shoes. I can still remember getting fitted for shoes with their foot gauge as a little girl. Their school shoe range now has a few styles available up to size 9 UK in a variety of widths.
Clarks Scala patent loafers are available in narrow, standard, wide and extra wide widths. These smart slip-on shoes have quite a sophisticated look.
These contemporary Loxham brogue black patent shoes with a chunky sole are also available up to size 9 UK in both standard and wide fit.
Both styles have padded collars around the opening for extra comfort. They also feature Clarks' Agion technology and an eco foam lined fabric sock help them stay fresh.
TIP: the Clarks women's workwear range also has plenty of size 9 styles suitable for school too, although these tend to cost more than the children's range.
Clarks offer free postal returns and a 28 day return period if your school shoes don't work out.
The ASOS DESIGN brand is a great source of affordable, fashionable shoes, sometimes right up to size 11 UK for women. With free returns, you can try them out risk free too.
How about these bang on trend Melon chunky loafers for just £25? They go up to size 11 UK and would rock any school uniform.
Plenty of Asos flat, black shoes in size 9 UK would make trendy school shoes for a fashion conscious teenage girl. As of July 2021, most are not available in size 10 or 11 UK unfortunately. Styles come and go quite quickly on ASOS so here's the link to ASOS black flat shoes in size 10 & 11 UK to keep an eye on.
Asos Design is a fast fashion brand, so if your daughter has sensitive feet or needs to do a lot of walking, I'd suggest looking at other shoe
brands more focused on walking and comfort instead. Look at Clarks and Pavers, or Doc Martens or Low Heels if you have a high budget.
It's a bit of a lucky dip but Amazon is also worth a look for school shoes in large sizes. If you stick to shoes sold/fulfilled by Amazon, returns are free. Plus, if you're an Amazon prime member in the UK or US (30 day free trial available), you can now also try before you buy with Prime Wardrobe. You pick up to 6 items to try on at home, and then only pay for what you decide to keep. What a time to be alive!
I get better results by filtering by my shoe size & browsing women's shoe categories rather than just using the search bar. Here's a couple of examples in stock as of July 15 2021.
Spanish brand Andrés Machado (Andypola) also sell through Amazon Prime which is easier for UK customers post Brexit. These neat ballet flats with a bow detail are available at a good price point in black faux leather, suede and patent options up to size 11.5 UK wide fit.
These smart Campina loafers by German brand Sioux are available up to size 10 UK.
TIP: Watch out for incorrect size listings on Amazon. It's best to cross check sizing with the brand's own website if possible. For example, Clarks women's shoes may be listed on Amazon in size 10 uk when they only make them up to size 9 uk.
Amazon stock changes quickly, but there should always be a good choice of size 9 UK black flat shoes that could work well for school. Usually, there's some size 9.5 and 10 uk options too, and even a few size 11+ UK if you get lucky. Here's some quick direct links to black flat shoes in large sizes to help: mary jane shoes, loafers, ballet flats and brogues & laced shoes.
Long Tall Sally have several black loafer and ballet flat shoes that could work well as school shoes. There's a mix of premium leather shoes & more affordable styles.
These bow trim loafers for £39 look very neat and the little gold tipped bows add a cute touch.
While certain styles go right up to size 12 UK, I've had feedback that LTS shoes run small. So I'd suggest ordering a size up from your usual shoe size, or perhaps ordering both sizes to try on at home.
Dorothy Perkins usually have some very affordable ballerina pumps
& loafers up to size 9 UK. Styles do tend to come and go fairly
These Legend tassel loafers are in stock in size 9 as of 9 July 2021 and Dorothy Perkins have good summer sale offers on too.
These could work well as school shoes. They are practical and neat looking for larger feet. Plus the gold tassel detail and matching studded contrast trim make them a little bit special.
Pavers focus on comfortable shoes at an affordable price. This could be a good option if the school day involves a lot of walking or your daughter has sensitive feet that blister easily.
These smart leather tassel loafers are on the narrow side which can be hard to find in larger sizes.
There is a good range of flat everyday shoes up to size 9 uk that could work well for school. Choose from mary jane, ballerina and other loafer styles. Selected shoes are also available in wide fit.
Pavers should also go up to size 10 UK in a few styles. However as of July 2021 hardly any flat black shoes listed for size 10 UK seem to actually go up to 10 UK. I'll enquire with Pavers to check that they plan to continue doing size 10 UK & update this post when I hear back.
Doc Martens have been around forever & have always been popular with secondary school & college students, especially those with more indie tastes.
Now Dr Martens are quite expensive & an investment buy. But they are also durable, so once those teenage feet have done growing, they should last a long time.
Docs women's styles go up to size 9 uk including these iconic Polley smooth leather mary janes. These go perfectly with a school uniform for a modern edgy look.
Many Doc Marten styles are unisex and available up to size 13 UK. I particularly like these Adrian tassel loafers made in smooth, polished leather.
Note that the leather is known to be quite stiff initially, so Dr Marten shoes will take some wearing in. But nurses on their feet all day swear by them, and once they soften up, find they get years of comfortable wear out of their DMs.
If you are still struggling to find any suitable school shoes, consider online UK brand Low Heels, who specialise in large shoe sizes (8-12 UK).
These Amalia leather loafers would make gorgeous school shoes for a sophisticated teen. Actually, I'd love a pair too! 😍
The Low Heels range starts from around £100, with the Amalia loafers priced at £130, which I realise is a LOT for school shoes. But, most styles are customisable which is highly unusual. So if you see a style you like, you can have it made in another colour or to suit particular foot measurements. If your daughter has real trouble finding comfortable shoes, it's well worth contacting founder Joanna to see if she can help.
Being a teenage girl is hard enough these days without worrying about finding school shoes that fit. So I hope these shoe shopping options help. If you know of any other stores selling plus size school shoes please contact me, or why not show off your school shoes on Insta & tag @pretty.big.shoes or #prettybigshoes.
